چکیده

We propose a robust optimization approach to address a multi-period, inventory control problem under ambiguous demands, that is, only limited information of the demand distributions such as mean, support and some measures of deviations. Our framework extends to correlated demands and is developed around a factor-based model, which has the ability to incorporate business factors as well as time series forecast effects of trend, seasonality and cyclic variations. We can obtain the parameters of the replenishment policies by solving a tractable deterministic optimization problem in the form of second order cone optimization problem (SOCP), with solution time, unlike dynamic programming approaches, is polynomial and independent on parameters such as replenishment lead time, demand variability, correlations, among others. The proposed truncated linear replenishment policy (TLRP), which is piecewise linear with respect to demand history, improves upon static and linear policies. Our computational studies also suggest that it performs better than simple heuristics derived from dynamic programming. ∗The April 2007 version of this paper went by the title “Robust Inventory Management using Tractable Replenishment Policies”. †Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, National University of Singapore. A Practically Efficient Approach for Solving Adaptive Distributionally Robust Linear Optimization Problems

We develop a modular and tractable framework for solving an adaptive distributionally robust linear optimization problem, where we minimize the worst-case expected cost over an ambiguity set of probability distributions. The adaptive distrbutaionally robust optimization framework caters for dynamic decision making, where decisions can adapt to the uncertain outcomes as they unfold in stages. Fo...

On distributionally robust multiperiod stochastic optimization

This paper considers model uncertainty for multistage stochastic programs. The data and information structure of the baseline model is a tree, on which the decision problem is de ned. We consider ambiguity neighborhoods around this tree as alternative models which are close to the baseline model. Closeness is de ned in terms of a distance for probability trees, called the nested distance. This ...

Single and multi-period optimal inventory control models with risk-averse constraints

This paper presents some convex stochastic programming models for single and multiperiod inventory control problems where the market demand is random and order quantities need to be decided before demand is realized. Both models minimize the expected losses subject to risk aversion constraints expressed through Value at Risk (VaR) and Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) as risk measures. A sample ...

Capacity Acquisition, Subcontracting, and Lot Sizing

The fundamental question encountered in acquiring capacity to meet nonstationary demand over a multiperiod horizon is how to balance the trade-off between having insufficient capacity in some periods and excess capacity in others. In the former situation, part of the demand is subcontracted while, in the latter, capacity that has been paid for is rendered idle. Capacity and subcontracting decis...
